ABC Family’s ‘The Fosters’ Gets Early Second-Season Pickup

With production still underway on the back freshman season order for ABC Family‘s The Fosters, the network has picked up a second season of the family drama, executive produced by Jennifer Lopez. The second part of Season 1 launches in January 2014. “The Fosters has demonstrated its ability to build an audience, and the creative team’s compelling storytelling assures us that there will be more growth in upcoming seasons,” said ABC Family Chief Creative Officer Kate Juergens. The Fosters ranked as the #1 new cable TV series of the summer in viewers 12-34 and females 12-34, building throughout its run and setting across-the-board series highs in its summer finale. The Fosters, which was lauded by GLAAD in its annual LGBT representation on TV report released today, is about a multi-ethnic family mix of foster and biological kids being raised by two moms, played by Teri Polo and Sherri Saum. Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige are the creators/executive producers/showrunners, with Johanna Johnson as exec producer/co-showrunner.

  • Not pleased about this.

ABC “Family” should feature traditional family values, not a liberal agenda. There are too many shows on this network that are not suitable for family viewing.

    • Oh please. If there’s anyone that’s “non-traditional”, it’s you. Wake up and join the rest of the world here in the 21st century.

    • ABC Family should show all kinds of families, a family isn’t always mom, dad and bio-child, it’s fosterfamilies (that aren’t always as bad as they’re often portraied on tv), it’s gay-relationships, it’s single parents, it’s stepparents etc. They are all equally good and shoudl all be allowed to be seen and heard.

I love The Fosters, it’s much more down-to-earth than many other shows out there.

    • this whole “family” thing has been discussed before. the word “family” was a contractual stipulation. it has to be there. there’s no agenda. it’s just life. you can go view your narrow version of “family” elsewhere if you choose.

      • Yeah, like there are millions of families like this one. You must be a charter member of the agenda pushers.

    • @vic The network doesn’t exist to schedule programming for your pathetic family. All of ABC Family’s programming is suitable for viewing by my family. Your so-called “family” values are disgusting and dated, very happy this network doesn’t provide you with programming that fits your “traditional family” values.

    • There is this thing called a REMOTE. Make it your best friend, as it appears you have no others.

    • You may want to look at the cable channels UP (the former Gospel Music Channel), Hallmark Channel, BYUTV and FamilyNet. There are other choices out there for family programming, along with Netflix’s heavy family-based section, and in 2013 there are many other ways to get quality programming if you disagree with ABC Family’s programming direction.

Meanwhile I’m very happy “The Fosters” will return because they reflect an image of a true family in this age and a caring lesbian couple that isn’t found anywhere else on television currently.

    • Vic, I agree with you. Tired of seeing “alternative lifestyle” parents crammed down my throat on every network. Stay strong in your beliefs, Vic. Once these fools see how messed up this generation with gay/lesbian/transgender parents turns out, the pendulum is bound to swing back towards a more conservative direction. It’s just a matter of physics and time.

      • A matter of physics and time? Really? That’s funny.

    • I totally agree. Two lesbians is not a family. ABC Family has been, and continues to be, a joke.

      • I’m a lesbian. With a wife and 2 kids. We are a family. A happy family. You say we aren’t but that doesn’t change the fact that we’re still here.

    • A lack of discrimination against people who are different from you is not “Shoving it down your throat.” Hell, it’s not even a total lack. It’s just less discrimination, and you’re pitching a fit. The fact that your kind no longer get to control and discriminate against others might be upsetting for you, but it’s not a reversal of oppression. You have a total freedom to live the way you want, and you can flip to just about any channel and see families like yours. All anyone needs you to do is not be a jerk to others about THEIR choices. This show is awesome. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it.

  • You are wrong vic. The Fosters is all about traditional family values of love and support and caring. They adopt children and also foster kids. I feel very sorry for you and your misguided thoughts on what constitutes family.

    • That’s like saying, “Although I don’t agree with African Americans appearing on television, I do enjoy watching Scandal”

People like lorrie are no different from the KKK, just replace race with sexual orientation.

  • So happy for Teri Polo. A fine actress and a really down-to-earth person. I was on crew for her comedy Authors Anonymous and she had this nice comedic side to her. But The Fosters is a solid family show with heart and glad to see it back for another season. Good move.
