Fox Buys Ensemble Comedy Produced By Aaron Kaplan

It’s a high-five at Fox for Fives, a single-camera comedy from writer/executive producer Shawn Wines, executive producer Aaron Kaplan and Warner Bros. TV, which has received a script commitment. The project reunites all the auspices of last season’s comedy Upstairs, which marked aspiring filmmaker Wines’ first sale. Fox brass liked the writer’s effort, based on his viral comedy short, and were interested in developing with him again. Fives is about a group of people who are excruciatingly average (5 on a scale of 10), coming together to battle daily life in the most image-conscious city in the world: Los Angeles. Kaplan has a history of keeping creative teams intact, which has worked well for him. He worked with comedy writer Dana Klein and 20th TV during the 2011-12 development season on Daddy’s Girls, which went to pilot at NBC. The following season, the same group landed a series order at CBS for Friends With Better Lives.

  • When I first saw the name, I wondered if it would be a show about people who like to give high-fives. Then Howie Mandel would make Fists to compete with it.

  • Two faces that don’t spell comedy.

  • Just glad it’s set in L.A. Would hate to watch an ensemble comedy that’s not set in LA or NYC.

  • Meh. I saw the “Upstairs” short.

What’s that old joke about golf? A nice walk, ruined.

  • Why do you have to be such a hater Eye-Fi….

  • Aaron Kaplan is singlehandedly stymying the return of half-hour comedy. Finally, someone has sold the anti-friends. Homely Friends. Goes with Kaplan’s Dana Klein show, Bitter Friends. Hey who’s got the TV rights to Friends With Money? Anyone pitching Black Friends? Asian Friends? Gay Friends might actually be interesting. And no, comment fans, not bitter — i’m on assignment on a feature and just sold a half-hour. Hey Shawn, congrats to you. Ride this stallion all the way to the bank, he’s magical.

  • So the writer considers himself a “5″? Self-respect fail.
