NBC Will Live-Stream Olympics Closing Ceremony: Report

NBC said today it will stream Sunday’s Olympic closing ceremony live online after all, the AP reported. In changing its position, NBC acknowledged that it has taken plenty of heat over its decision to broadcast tape-delayed coverage of the Summer Games in London including the Opening Ceremony on July 27.

But NBC has found that live streaming of Olympic sports events hasn’t cut into its primetime viewiership, which for the most part has surpassed the 2008 Games in Beijing as well as other previous Games. Sunday’s stream will be available to cable and satellite customers who go to the NBCOlympics.com website. NBC described Sunday’s stream as an experiment and emphasized that it doesn’t necessarily mean the network would apply the same approach to the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. The stream is supposed to be available to cable and satellite customers who go to the NBCOlympics.com website. Ceremony begins at 9 p.m. London time and 1 p.m. Pacific.

During Sunday’s proceedings flagbearers from participating nations will enter the stadium followed by all the competing athletes together instead of by nationality. The ceremony will include a handover from London to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Summer Games, followed by the extinguishing of the Olympics flame, signaling the official end of the current Games.

  • What I don’t like is that NBC is going to interrupt their coverage of these ceremonies tomorrow night with that awful preview of that new show of theirs “Animal Practice” and then air the local news and then return to the coverage JIP after the newscast before going into a re-broadcast of the event. Didn’t NBC get a clue when they got reamed for doing this two years ago? I mean, seriously!!!

  • Good…hopefully they will also show it sans commentary. So far NBC’s entire Olympics coverage has been nothing short of shameful. I can only hope that the next Olympics is broadcast live over the internet for all to see…unedited and WITHOUT NBC’s ridiculous commentary and censorship.

  • Streaming live ! Why ? Oh thank you again NBC for making my life so much better . The quality of your coverage is in a word (fucked) I also love your “spoiler alerts ” on the nightly news sports …. So let’s get this right so we all understand . Your not letting me watch a live event so you can delay it for 8 hour so I can see it after the Today show has reported the metal tally and event winners and then you interupt it all to cross to DC for some important news about a plane getting ready to fly some WASP to see another WASP …… I pray the world ends up like the new turd tv show Revolution so I can hunt down NBC execs with my perfectly quaffed hair . Ok I’m rambling .,.

  • You won’t be able to watch the live stream unless you are a cable TV subscriber that receives MSNBC or CNBC.

If you have a basic package (local channels only) NBC.com will show this message:

“It looks like your TV subscription does not support access to NBC Olympics Live Extra. Please contact your TV provider. A current subscription to a TV video programing package that includes MSNBC and CNBC is required for access to NBC Olympics Live Extra.”

  • The 2012 NBC Coverage of the London Olympics can be described easily with just 1 Word + it’s definition:

    tyr·an·ny

    n. pl. tyr·an·nies
    1. A government in which a single ruler is vested with absolute power.
    2. The office, authority, or jurisdiction of an absolute ruler.
    3. Absolute power, especially when exercised unjustly or cruelly: “I have sworn . . . eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man” (Thomas Jefferson).
    4.
    a. Use of absolute power.
    b. A tyrannical act.
    5. Extreme harshness or severity; rigor.

  • I do not understand why an event that occurs once every 4 years has to be interrupted during the most emotive part of live transmission to show a lo-cultural disappointing humor an tacky show about veterinarians and animals. Makes me wonder why we can’t get our act together and simply go back to the America that we all love with supreme interest in knowledge, culture and science. There is nothing wrong about enjoying the celebration of our country their attletes and their emotions, as our little ones inspire their dreams on the beautifully executed 2012 Olympics for another hour.

In NBC’s eyes, it is “commendable” to slap Shakespeare’s ceremonial 2012 play with ketchup and mustard and call it a success. The ill-fated vet-animal comedy will cool down as quickly as the fries that came with it leaving behind no recollection of its taste. Perhaps, persisting in wery minds as the shameful programming event that interrupted the 2012 olympic closing ceremony.
