Michael Keaton Joins ‘Robocop’ Remake

BREAKING: Michael Keaton has been set to play the role of Raymond Sellars in the MGM/Columbia Pictures’ RoboCop remake. Sellars is the CEO of the corporation that builds RoboCop, a role that Hugh Laurie was expected to play until he dropped out before consummating a deal. The film, a re-imagining of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven cult classic, is scheduled to begin shooting next month. RoboCop will be released on August 9, 2013.

Keaton joins previously announced Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Abbie Cornish in the Jose Padilha-directed film.

“Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place. It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the streets,” said Padilha.

It’s good to see Keaton back in a mainstream film. He’s repped by ICM Partners.

    • Keaton showed darkness, slight humor, personality and sorrow. He was the perfect Batman. Now that The Dark Knight movies are over with even the nerdy fan boys are starting to admit it on the entertainment sites.

It would be great to see him as an older/experienced Batman in the Justice League movie. We’ve seen the great older Batman in the comics. If they bring him back for Justice League then the fan boys will go wild and it will guarantee more seats a filled.

      • That’s just nostalgia talking, I watched Batman Returns recently, boy, it hasn’t aged well and Keaton is stiff as he is boring. Don’t get me wrong, Keaton is terrific but Batman he aint

        • Thing is, Keaton was hired to do Batman because he was so good for the role of Bruce Wayne. And Bruce should be the last person you’d expect to be Batman.
You have a point, though, that his performance in Batman Returns was less than stellar- he was far better in the earlier Batman. I suspect that was, at least in part, due to the relatively hackneyed writing on the Selena Kyle/Catwoman love interest subplot.

      • Can’t we finally have a real batman—six foot three, square jawed and physically imposing?…we can still keep the psychotic edge

    • i agree this movie does need a GOOD reboot, though the original is a cult classic, i feel Robocop was always underrated due to its campiness plus i believe the sequels, tv series, cartoon flops had some part in that. If done right this time around, Robocop could get his name in the books with the big boys -batman, ironman, superman, spiderman, Terminator. so for that reason this needs the reboot for todays audience.(not-watered down though) jose padilha is a great director

      • How was the original Robocop ‘camp’ . It was bloody and brutal.

A cop getting shot to pieces by shotgun camp?!
A robot blasting to pieces a OCP exec camp?!
A VP snorting coke off a call girls tits camp?!

  • Michael Keaton is going to play the CEO of the corporation that builds RoboCop?

Sounds like something Bruce Wayne would do. ;-)

  • Where has Michael Keaton been the past 15 years? It’s like he dropped off the face of the Earth back in the late 90s. What happened? Always liked him as an actor, so hope this reboot is successful.

      • Actually Multiplicity was a great little film and Keaton was brilliant. Timing? Marketing? Too bad it didn’t get seen.
