Meghan Ory Upped To Series Regular On ABC’s ‘Once Upon A Time’

EXCLUSIVE: We’ll be seeing a lot more of Ruby in the magic-themed second season of Once Upon A Time. Meghan Ory, who  recurred as Ruby aka Red Riding Hood on the freshman season of the breakout ABC drama, has been upped to series regular for the upcoming second season. I hear the promotion was put in motion at the beginning of 2012 when Ory started fielding strong interest for pilots. It was triggered recently, following Once‘s second season renewal by ABC. Canadian-born Ory, Gersh and manager Russ Mortensen, ended up appearing in 17 of the 22 episodes of Once‘s first season.

  • I was hoping they would up Emilie De Ravin to a regular. She was great as Belle.

    • Who knows? They might, the new season hasn’t started filming yet. I think that Meghan has a larger fan base than Emilie among “Once” viewers and so that is why she was the first of the two to be upped to a series regular.

      • Actually Belle and the Rump/Belle paring have a HUGE following.

This article says the promotion happened back during pilot season(feb/march). At that time, Emilie had signed on to do a pilot.

It wasn’t until mid-May that the news hit that ABC didn’t pick up her new show, by that time they had probably already decided that they wanted Meghan as a regular.

        • I know that the Belle/Rumple pairing is popular, but I am not sure that Belle has a huge fan-base on her own apart from being Rumple’s love interest (she has only been in three episodes). Ruby has her own fan-base, Meghan calls them “little reds”. Just like Lana Parrilla (the evil Queen) has her “evil regals”. Furthermore, Ruby has been in 17 episodes compared to Belle being in only three, so its not surprising at all that the show would give Ruby’s character priority when comes to being upped to a series regular.

    • Maybe they will in future seasons, you never know.

  • I love Meghan! I’m so happy for her. I’m glad that the show has finally recognized her worth. She has a significant fan-base among the show’s viewers which is an accomplishment considering that she usually does not have a story-line (except for one episode) and is just kept in the background and given a line or two of dialogue.

  • Notes to Jennifer Morrison and Ginnifer Goodwin (and their people):

DO NOT STAND NEXT TO MEGHAN.

That doesn’t do you any favors. My god, she is gorgeous. And fairly talented to boot. Good for her, and ABC.

    • Jennifer can hold her own, especially when she wears jeans.

Ginnifer, on the other hand? Oh honey, I just feel so bad for her. That was some tragic bit of casting there. The evil queen isn’t supposed to be light years more attractive than Snow White.

      • Morrison looks like a grandma. I was shocked when i heard she is only thirty something.

        • @Paul, call an ophthalmologist.
@Patrick It’s just because she was a recurring role in Season 1 so no cast photos whit the cast for her.

  • I’ve been waiting for this! She’s totally the most deserving recurrent. I think Belle hasn’t earned it yet, same for August. I would be ok with Grumpy being promoted.

  • Meh. The only thing she has going for her is that she is stunningly beautiful. Ruby/Red is such a basic and vanilla character. I wouldn’t miss her if she never showed up again. Snow White and Granny completly stole the show from her in Red Handed. Even stupid Cinderella/Ashley showed more personality and better acting than she ever did. I hope she will be like Archie screentime wise and won’t take away time from the more interesting characters.

    • In the entertainment industry, being “stunningly beautiful” IS a powerful advantage. I also happen to have enjoyed her character(s) last season and had assumed she was already a series regular so this is welcome news.

    • Well, obviously the the producers felt differently as well as her fans the “little reds”. She was offered a regular role because she was considering pilots so I suspect she will get more airtime.

  • Her episode was the BEST episode of the first season, and her character(s) have so much room to play with. This is the best news to come from Season 2. She deserved this. THANK YOU ONCE UPON A TIME PRODUCERS FOR MAKING MY DREAMS COME TRUE!

  • Eoin Bailey is already a series regular. I would assume he’ll be back next season despite the relative cliffhanger over his Fate. Jennifer Morrison needs a love interest and they had great chemistry.
