SNL: Daytime’s New Soap ‘The Californians’

Maybe because it’s 3 AM in Los Angeles but I found this kinda funny…

  • Agree that it’s very funny!

This episode was subpar for me except for this skit, because they got the stereotypical “Californian” people look down to a tee, and made me realize the stereotypes actually exist in my head. :D

  • I’m guessing you have to be from California or have lived there to get this, because I have absolutely no clue what they’re talking about.

    • We’re obsessed with traffic routes and refer to our highways as “The 405″ and “the 10″ and so forth – it’s actually very accurate. The route you drive is a major topic of conversation, dude.

      • Agreed! I grew up in SoCal, then moved to NoCal, where I would say, “Well, take the 101 to the 12…” and everyone would say, “THE 101, THE 12, what do you mean?!” Especially on the west side of LA, you know, near THE 405 and THE 10…traffic and traffic routes are obsessions…totally lol-ing through this entire skit…BUT…since I don’t watch SNL regularly, is it just the current cast that is UNABLE to memorize their lines and relies, distractingly, on the teleprompter?

        • Yes, the actors do read from the cue cards, but that’s the nature of being in a live show where lines/sketches can be completely overhauled in a short span of time. Read the book “Live from New York” for an interesting behind the scenes look. It grows appreciation for what they do over at SNL. It also explains why it’s such a great training ground for so many actors.

  • Great Skit – but yeah – kinda california-centric. Laughed out loud. Now we know why daytime soap operas are over. They’ll just do prime time ones instead! LOL

  • Dumb and most of the directions were wrong. This show just sucks now.

  • So accurate. As someone who lives on the East Coast, every time I go to LA I really don’t understand why people constantly talk about the highways (“freeways”). I especially hate the way they say “The 5″ or “The 10″. If said “The 95″ or “The 1&9″ I would be shot.

But thank god they finally put up exit numbers, it makes getting around so much easier.

    • It’s not unique to CA at all –

In upstate NY we say “The 5 and 20″ (Route 5-20 combined) … “The QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way – Canada)… The 400 (Buffalo) etc.

Not as much as in CA, but enough.

  • Forget the inaccurate driving directions, the looking in the mirror bit hit closest to home. I never looked at myself so much when I lived in other places. And I don’t have any hair at all, although I suppose in my mind I’m a blonde.

    • Just a riff-off on Ventura Highway inverted.

    • I think it’s supposed to be a parody of the opening bars of Ventura Highway by America.
