GLAAD Board Elects Media Savvy President
GLAAD’s National Board of Directors today elected media veteran Herndon
Graddick as the new President of the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender media advocacy and anti-defamation organization. A nationwide search zeroed in on Haddick who was already in a prominent position with the organization. The new president of GLAAD will be formally introduced at the 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on April 21st. Haddick has ben a Supervising Producer at E! Networks, the day-of-air news division director at Current TV, and a producer at CNN. Graddick today was called ”a
visionary and strategic leader”. Graddick said in a statement: “Right now GLAAD and our partners in the LGBT movement are making a significant difference at a time when a difference needs to be made. GLAAD’s work with the media to inspire Americans to speak out against anti-LGBT actions and support equality is needed today more than ever.” Graddick is GLAAD’s current VP of Programs and Communications, a position he assumed in 2010. He has led GLAAD’s media initiatives and oversees the organization’s National & Local News; Entertainment; People of Color; Religion, Faith & Values; Advertising; and Spanish-Language Media programs. Under his leadership, GLAAD has engaged in numerous highly visible campaigns, including ‘Stand Up For Ellen’ which prompted the group One Million Moms – a project of the American Family Association – to end their call for J.C. Penney to fire Ellen DeGeneres as its new spokesperson because she is gay. Graddick also oversaw GLAAD’s work on the Commentator Accountability Project – an initiative launched in March to highlight the extreme rhetoric of anti-LGBT activists who currently appear in national news outlets. He is working with film director Brett Ratner to develop a series of videos with GLAAD featuring high-profile celebrities and public figures speaking out for LGBT equality.
Great choice to lead GLAAD. He’s smart and passionate and knows the media landscape well.
Fierce. Cheers, queers! Congrats GLAAD and Mr. Graddick!
Is he thin skinned too? Is he going to attack anyone who cracks a joke about gays?
It’s off to the GLAAD re-education camp with you, Alex.
I assume that everyone in this organization is a US citizen? The message to the public should ONLY be that ” we are Americans fighting for our jobs in America ” and nothing else. The image of everyone should be looking their most professional and that they should get hired based on their qualifications and nothing less, but everyone here must look their most professional and speak very professional. They will tarnish their own image if they talk about their private lives such as sex life, where they pray etc, it will make them look unprofessional and not mature. Everyone’s private lives straight and gay included, should be kept fiercely private and only to be shared with their loved ones, and what their beliefs are as far as religion should be kept private as well. When you show up to work, your employers expect everyone to leave their personal problems and lives at home and not bring it on the job with them! I don’t think being gay or have different beliefs cost people their jobs, as long as they deliver results and a great asset to any company, but I do believe that anyone who is unprofessional and not carry themselves appropriately will not get the respect from people. Change begins with us , not outside. I think if everyone here walks into an interview and is undeniably the best choice then they will get hired, at that point I don’t think people care if they’re gay, or minority or different religion. Stop limiting yourselves with these wrong beliefs, change the way you carry and present yourself in public and be the best that you can be, and thing will change in your favor! I don’t think our society now is as ignorant as it used to be…..
Everyone here should watch how Neil Patrick Harris interviews and carries himself. He is gay, but that’s his private life, his image is always conservative, classy, professional, and his answers for reporters are always very short and clean….he works all the time.
So watch him and learn from him. Believe me, if a straight person shows up on the job and can’t stop talking about their religion or sex life, they will get fired too. So we change ourselves and we change the world around us! Don’t handicap yourselves by making excuses and having the wrong beliefs about yourselves, just believe that you can do anything and achieve anything, no one puts those limitations of you, but you….
Keep the campaign message clean and professional….the job market is very tight and competitive now with a bad economy and high unemployment rate, so don’t handicap yourselves by making people look at you like you’re so different, just show that you can do it better because you can deliver, that’s all that counts, people want great results! Empower yourselves by thinking positive as opposed to negative. Also I don’t believe in Spanish language programs, because if they live in the US legally, they must learn to speak English, we speak English here in this country, and that rule will not change! If you don’t speak English, you don’t get work, so no Spanish language programs, it makes people lazy and they can live in South America and speak Spanish! This is AMERICA and we speak ENGLISH here!
