CNN’s Soledad O’Brien To Fox’s Roger Ailes: ‘I Was Named After The Virgin Mary’

http://www.deadline.com/tag/soledad-obrien/http://www.deadline.com/tag/roger-ailes/Fox News chairman/CEO Roger Ailes referred to CNN’s Soledad O’Brien in a speech earlier this week to North Carolina journalism students as “that girl that’s named after a prison.” MediaIte, which reported Ailes’ remark, updated its report when O’Brien Tweeted a correction: “Um. I wasn’t named after a prison. Ailes is mistaken. I was named after the Virgin Mary.” O’Brien has addressed the issue before. Her name is Maria de la Soledad Teresa O’Brien. Her father chose the name Maria de la Soledad to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary of Solitude — which in Spanish is soledad.

  • So when given the opportunity to address the next generation of journalists, he took an immature pot shot at a competitor? Not a fan of Soledad’s work, but there’s a time and a place for everything. Oh well, at least he didn’t waste time extolling the virtues of accurate and responsible journalism, that would have been the real farce.

  • this is such a generic statement that is utterly inapplicable to this situation: he clearly insulted her, racially and personally for no apparent reason than just to be a jerk. And your being an apologist for this type of behavior is hardly worthy of the effort. IF you can only see the world as ‘them’ and ‘my team’, you’ve lost not only a great degree of what truly makes (and has made) America great: the ability for many points of view to meld together and form the nation. You’ve lost all sense of proportion and what is normal behavior. I’m not an extremist on either side, but I think this sort of ugly, insulting rhetoric ought to be just kicked to the curb, no matter who says it. And your blanket attack on liberals on anything that involves some conservative demigod does nothing to forward either the course of the debate or the nation but just adds fuel to an already raging and unnecessary conflagration.

  • Ailes is beating a dead horse… Soledad’s ratings are the worst in ten years at CNN in her timeslot.. She’ll be replaced by the end of the year..

CNN was replaced by FOX in the ratings a decade ago.

  • Do not insult Ailes!!! To do so is to risk becoming a victim of the almighty sarlacc…where you will be digested for a thousand years, forced to endure unending pain and suffering as you listen to endless broadcasts of the Rush Limbaugh radio show over and over until the end of time!!! I think Ailes himself said it best when he said-

“Han, mah bukee, keel-ee caleya ku kah. Wanta dah moole-rah? Wonkee chee sa crispa con Greedo?”

  • As opposed to Ailes who just flat out thinks he’s a Supreme Being who can do no wrong. Ms. O’Brien and a “few others” make CNN, a 24 hour news network, unwatchable. Maybe you should just tune in at differnt times of the day.

  • She’s a bore, he’s a pig. If she were a boar they would be related. That is all the interest I can up with.

  • Sorry, there’s no way to spin this as anything other than another in a long line of idiotic statements from the radical right that show both their stupidity and moral bankruptcy. And if that was supposed to be a “joke,” all I can say is, don’t quit your day job Mr. Ailes, you don’t have a future in standup.

    • Sure… because, as we all know, there isn’t an even longer line of idiotic statements from the radical (and the not so radical) left that show both their stupidity and moral bankruptcy. We could start with Bill Maher…

      • Rush Limbaugh called then-13-year old Chelsea Clinton a dog for no reason (and no, he didn’t mix up the slides).

He called Sandra fluke a whore for speaking her mind before Congress.

Ailes said Soledad’s named after a prison.

        See a pattern here?

And let’s not get on the whole Bill Maher/Palin thing. While I don’t condone him calling her the “c” word, let’s remember that before the incident she had spouted years of lies and venom toward anybody remotely on the left. The same cannot be said of 13-year Chelsea, Fluke or O’Brien.

  • So every female named Mary, or Maria, or Dolores for that matter (on the same principle as Soledad) thinks she’s the Mother of God? I see logic and coherent thinking is not your strong suit.

  • I’ll say it again. The ones who protect and support ignorance and borderline, racism, like Ailes is truly mind-boggling.

  • What a moron Ailes is…hey nitwit…do your homework first before spewing off stupid crap from your mouth that makes no sense. CNN isn’t any better.
