MGM Formally Offers Lead Remake Of Stephen King’s ‘Carrie’ To Chloe Moretz
BREAKING: After meeting and reading a group of young actresses for Carrie, MGM, Screen Gems and director Kim Peirce have made their decision and made the formal offer today to Chloe Moretz. If negotiations work out, she’ll play the title role in the remake of the Brian DePalma original that was based on the 1974 Stephen King bestseller. She’s expected to play the shy high school student Carrie White, who is raised by a nightmarish religious fanatic mother, and comes to grip with devastating telepathic powers just as she reaches puberty. She eventually uses those gifts for lethal means when fellow classmates use the prom as an excuse to humiliate her before the entire school in a parable about bullying. Sissy Spacek played the character in the first movie, with Piper Laurie playing her mother, and Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, John Travolta, Betty Buckley and William Katt rounding out the cast. Both Spacek and Laurie got Oscar nominations for their work in the 1976 film.
The studio and Peirce have been meeting with actresses for the past two weeks. Word all along was that while other names were circulating, Peirce and the studio had an eye on Moretz. The studio denied it at the time, but what actually happened is, Moretz didn’t meet with Peirce until last weekend. She got the job immediately. Moretz, who first came on with performances in Kick-Ass, (500) Days Of Summer and Let Me In, is at the top of the crop of young actresses. Coming off Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, her next major film is the Tim Burton-directed Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp. She’s repped by WME and 3 Arts. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the script and Kevin Misher’s producing.
Insiders said that once they make Moretz’s deal, they will focus on landing the psycho mom and supporting cast and they will shoot this year.
They already remade The Shining as a tv mini-series and they also already remade Carrie as a tv movie.
I hope he makers of this film remember that both Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were nominated for an Academy Award for the peformances. Name any actress you want but no one will hold a candle to Piper’s performance. The extremely talented Patricia Clarkson played a more stoic version of Margaret White in the tv movie and was unremarkable.
I don’t understand how this new version is supposed to be closer to the book when theyve already cast an actress that doesn’t look like the overweight with acne teen from the book.
I’m hoping it’s good but the movie was better than the book and had a waaaay better ending and let’s not forget DePalma’s brilliant split screen usage.
I agree with TW’s comment. I don’t think the question is whether or not we need another remake, but if Chloe would be a good choice for the role. Obviously the girl is fantastic, and as mentioned in other comments her roles showcase her wide range of abilities.
Well, they have already remade Carrie and The Shining? Also, a movie about Carrie’s daughter with same powers. The talk was they were remaking The Stand, when? Also, I think they need to remake IT. With all the technology it would be amazing on both of those movies.
I’m thinking Rose McGowen as Carrie’s mom….
She’s a great actress but I find she’s a bit too nice-looking to fill the role of Carrie…in the novel and in the original movie, Carrie was an awkward girl, introverted, and she was not pretty or at the least she was very plain. I also don’t see why we need a remake of a movie that was perfectly made to begin with.
It’s weird. Both in real life and in the movie, a young Sissy Spacek was quite beautiful. It was only in comparison with the models they surrounded her with did she become sorta plain.
Chloe is the perfect choice for this film if they are gonna do a remake either way I’m glad they picked her. I agree with what someone else said that Juliann Moore would be interesting as the mother.
Why hollywood is ruining us all the classics. Carrie is Sissy Spacek and it was set in the 70′s stop making remakes for lazy teens who don’t watch movies older than 2 years I can’t stand them!!!
Don’t worry, remakes don’t affect the original unless they’re better. Also, if Hollywood does a remake, and its bad, no matter if it was a remake, or an original story, it would still be a bad movie. Period.
Exactly! What remakes are ACTUALLY better?
Um… The Thing & Let Me In possibly and…. That’s all i got.
Chloe has been literally one of my favorite young actresses since Amityville Horror. She blew me away with her performance. She’s one of a kind.
Every movie I see of hers I believe her, I believe she’s that character, she’s “living the life” of the character that she’s playing.
I’m looking forward to see her performance as “Carrie” specially since she made that Sketck with “Funny or Die” as the dead girl, she gave me chills with that “dead girl” performance.
I believe “Carrie” will make her career even better and even more known in the industry, more than she already is.
I’m proud of you Chloe! I believe in you!!!
Great actress, gorgeous kid, but isn’t she something like fifteen? I suppose it’s no stranger than casting a 28-year old to play a senior, though.
I’ve read on other sites that she’s too pretty, which shouldn’t matter. The most beautiful girl in my high-school was ostracized by team cool-kid, mainly because she was always so shy, and I always envisioned her having some Carrie moment at graduation.
Now she’s a young lawyer… killing them that way.
Why is this being remade? Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the script? It’s a remake. How much writing does someone actually have to do?
It’s actually not. It’ll be based on Stephen King’s novel. The movie detoured from the book. If you’re gonna do a remake, make it different, which is what we’ll get her.
