Ryan Murphy Plans ‘One Hit Wonders’ With Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz, Beyonce And Andy Samberg

UPDATE: Beyonce’s camp says that she isn’t attached to One Hit Wonders, so perhaps this was a bit of over-exuberance on the part of the filmmakers. Still a crazy good cast if you ask me.

EXCLUSIVE: In a seven-figure preemptive deal, Sony Pictures is collaborating with Ryan Murphy on One Hit Wonders, a musical comedy pitch that will be written as a star vehicle for Gwyneth Paltrow, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz, Beyonce and Andy Samberg.

Murphy is attached to direct, and he will write the script with his Glee cohorts Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Murphy will produce with Paltrow (who has practically become a Glee cast member) and the latter makes her debut as a producer on this film. Murphy hopes to direct it after he completes The Normal Heart.

Paltrow, Witherspoon and Diaz will play three singers who each scored a top hit song in the 1990s before watching their careers go down the drain. They decide to form a super group. Samberg and his Lonely Island cohorts will be involved in generating music for the film, I’m told. The project came out of a dinner Murphy had at the Soho House with Paltrow, Diaz and Witherspoon. They wanted to do something fun together and kicked around ideas until they settled on One Hit Wonders. Murphy, who made Eat Pray Love with Sony Pictures chief Amy Pascal, took the pitch to her. Pascal bought it 10 minutes in. They are working the deals right now. Murphy previously made a big deal with Sony for a follow-up picture he’ll direct with Julia Roberts starring. Sony’s Elizabeth Cantillon and Hannah Minghella will steer the project.

  • Gwyneth Paltrow? Check.
    Reese Witherspoon? Check.
    Beyoncé? Check.
Kate Hudson? What, she’s not in there?

Ryan Murphy is a God. It’s as if he had taken the most irritating/vainest actresses not named “Jennifer Lopez”, put them in the same picture, so instead of each one having her separate project, they would combine to form a diamond of suckitude, so they won’t tarnish other movies for a few months.

Any sane person will just have to shut its TV set and don’t browse the Internet during the week this movie is released or else they will lose their mind.

I would have added Murphy to the list of very irritating people that we would get rid of for a while, then I remembered he will have anyway three different shows airing next season, and I don’t think that him having an even shorter attention span will benefit either of them.

  • Well, looks like it took no time for Murphy to hand off his TV shows.

  • I admire risk takers, but is Ryan Murphy sure he wants to risk his career on a vehicle for two actresses that the public hates?

  • This will be funny in that I will be hysterically laughing as it fails miserably both critically and at the box office. Come on girls, you’re all on your way down and this is the project you attach yourselves to? Perhaps not best to make hasty career decisions while under the influence of alcohol and follow through-challenged friends.

  • I smell a big stinker. Paltrow and Witherspoon starred recently in bombs, Diaz resurrected her career as a top A-list actress with “Bad Teacher” so this is not a good step for her. Hope to see her getting top billed because she’s the biggest star from these three.

  • So is this the most insider-y deal of all time, or merely tied for first?

  • Lonely Island takes it up to a whole new level. Could be genius. This would be sink or swim time for Murphy as a feature film director though. In my opinion. If it bombs – hello “Singing to the Converted Choir” – the series.
