NBC’s ‘The Playboy Club’ Will Air In Salt Lake City … On MyNetworkTV

KMYU-TV, the MyNetworkTV affiliate in Salt Lake City, is picking up the NBC drama The Playboy Club almost two weeks after the city’s NBC affiliate KSL dropped the series because of its subject matter. ”We respect the position of KSL and are pleased that KMYU can provide a home for The Playboy Club,” KMYU VP and general manager Steve Carlston told TVGuide. “This highly anticipated crime drama will now have the opportunity to be seen by the viewers throughout (the Salt Lake City market).” The series, a crime drama starring Eddie Cibrian and Amber Heard and set at the first Playboy Club in Chicago in the 1960s, will air in its regular Monday night slot in the fall. KSL, whose parent company is operated by the Mormon Church, was the only NBC affiliate to turn down the show.

  • How is “The Playboy Club” a crime drama? Do the bunnies solve cases? Is this the new Law & Order spinoff?

    • I think they’re calling it a crime drama because it will involve crime.

I believe the series kicks off with one of the characters accidentally killing a mafia and having to cover it up with the help of a character who once worked for the mob, but is currently about to run for D.A.

  • I think its the next-gen Charlies Angels disguising as bunnies. I give it 13 & then it’ll join Mr. Spelling 6 feet under.

  • im sorry that is ABSURD. its 2011 mormons – if u can’t deal don’t own an NBC affiliate this is going to be the most watered down version of what this series could have been on cable anyway. how ridiculous. i cant recall what other things they have threatened to drop but seem to recall something in recent past. this doesn’t call for a drop.

  • Personally if I were NBC I would yank their affiliation, but that’s just me. The trailer portrays the show as risque, but not something so bad as KSL would lead viewers to believe.

Most Mormons are probably very good people, but I don’t think they should make decisions on behalf of everyone. Do they not air SNL because of their off-color jokes?

And last question: Is KSL the only network affiliate of the big five to be owned by a company with ties to a religious organization?

    • Mormons have waaaaaaaaaaay too much money and secret pull for NBC to do this. Plus, with romney running for pres and also that other Mormon (cannot recall his name), Mormons will be big business for at least the next year and a half.

  • I love the mid century vibe and don’t mind if it’s dark or if there is adult content…if it’s good, I’m in. But seriously, Eddie Cibrian is the worst damn actor in Hollywood. The only way I can imagine watching this show is if he gets killed off in the first 5 minutes of episode 1. The only way I can imagine enjoying this show is if he gets killed every 5 minutes in episode 1.

  • My impression is that the playboy set is as doa as Barbie and the miss USA/America/universe league.

  • Why do we let Utah continue to be run as a Theocracy? Who are these idiot mormons? Message from Hollywood to Salt Lake – GO F YOURSELVES!

    • Yes, because it’s SO wrong for a business to make decisions that will garner good-favor with its customer base. The church itself didn’t make the decision anyway, it was made by people, as a business decision.

You can moan and complain all you want, but regardless of what the actual content of the show is, it has been proven too many times to ignore that a name is powerful. The simple fact is, a show with the name “Playboy” in it is going to automatically be associated in people’s minds with nudity, sex, porn, and so on.

Can’t you see how that might just be a bit risky to put on your schedule? Perhaps it would be a smashing hit, but perhaps it will be a black hole that no advertiser pumps money into, and nobody watches. Yes, the advertisers also have to consider where to put their dough. In a place where so many parents ban shows like “The Simpsons” in their homes, how many more will ban this one?

Seems smart to me, in that area of the country.
