Will Oscarcast Co-Host Anne Hathaway Duet With Tom Cruise In ‘Rock Of Ages?’

EXCLUSIVE: Now that Tom Cruise has closed his deal to co-star in Rock of Ages, I’m hearing that the next big star New Line and director Adam Shankman want is Oscarcast co-host Anne Hathaway. They’re in talks with Hathaway to play the role of the uptight journalist who intends to eviscerate Cruise’s decadent rock star Stacee Jax with an expose. Instead, she falls for the charms of the rocker, and after they duet to the Foreigner song I Want To Know What Love Is, they engage in a wild, passionate bedroom romp. That gives Cruise two 80s staples to sing, as he also belts out the Bon Jovi tune Wanted Dead Or Alive. Of course, Deadline has told you several times that Cruise was going to do the film. The most recent was the January 20th revelation that Russell Brand was in line to play Lonnie, who runs the ’80s rock club The Bourbon for owner Dennis (the role Alec Baldwin will play), with the two of them singing a duet of REO Speedwagon’s Can’t Fight This Feeling. Hathaway’s shown she has the vocal chops, so that’s not a problem. She can only take the role, though, if she is able to mesh schedules with The Dark Knight Rises. She recently landed the coveted role of Selena Kyle/Catwoman and the films will be shooting around the same time.

THR’s Borys Kit was smart to report Cruise had actually closed the deal we’ve told you about repeatedly, because it triggers every subsequent deal including the one Hathaway hopes to make on Rock of Ages. But how about The Wrap, moments ago, sending out a breathless alert hours late, after stealing THR’s information? That website, launched with the promise that it would put the trades out of business and be “the end of press release journalism,” has become an absolutely shameless aggregator masquerading as a legitimate publication. I see them swipe every bit of original reporting they find and they so rarely add anything new that I suggest they consider renaming themselves Redundant.com. They just swiped my Nicholas Hoult Jack the Giant Killer story; let’s see if they pilfer Hathaway.

  • So he has a sense of humor about Anne’s SNL skit then?

    • Or is Tom trying to spite Mrs. Cruise?

  • Tom Cruise in ROCK OF AGES makes about as much sense as Tom Cruise in AVENUE Q.

… As far as the bottom half of the piece, it’s amusing to see an ‘editorial voice’ that sounds remarkably like hisssssing.

    • I actually saw the show. Did you? Tom Cruise in this role will further his broad reach and solidify him as a guy who can truly do it all. See the show before you comment and embarrass yourself.

    • Fair go. What do you expect them to say about The Wrap? “Thanks for stealing our work without so much as a speck of accreditation, guys! Kisses!”

  • Does anyone else think this movie sounds like one very long and unfunny SNL sketch?

  • Anne was unbelievably great when she hosted SNL last year. Her wonderful impressions of Katie Holmes, Judy Garland (Wizard of Oz), drunk redneck Black Friday customer were flawless. Plus, Hathaway can easily sing circles around Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Gwyneth Paltrow, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Nicole Kidman.

  • Mike post a fake “hot news” article something that sounds real but is really false and then expose all the sites that steal the story and report it as being legitimate. If you do this right they won’t know which is the fake story and you can embarrass them after they all take the bait.

As for this movie it will be a disaster of epic proportions for Cruise. He is so wrong for this and is being so badly advised. Nobody wants to see him sing. This sounds like it should be a sketch on Saturday Night Live see Tom sing and dance.

  • I love, love Hathaway – I love every film she has done, she is talented beyond her years, professional, smart and above all nice. She is nice to everyone regardless of their rank on the totem pole.

  • Hathaway is the real deal.

Cruise is trying to attach himself to any project that skews to his demographic, as he quietly ages out of it.

Waiting for him to shave his head and do a Bruce Willis. I’m saying 2013, depending on what happens with MI:4.

  • This movie sounds…potentially disasterous.

Stick to the Dark Knight Anne. (Although I cannot imagine how they could arrange for her to do both unless this is a small role. Selina Kyle won’t be a small role).

Tom Cruise singing huh? Is there enough Autotune in the world…yikes. He’d be smart to go comedic, since no one can take him seriously anymore.

  • Ever since I fIrst heard the idea of Tom in this role, I’ve gone from mildly interested in this project, to downright obsessed. Prediction: Rock Of Ages will cross 150m domestic. Genius casting.
