2ND UPDATE, SATURDAY AM: An MSNBC insider told this to Deadline today about Keith Olbermann’s departure Friday:
“This was all Keith’s choice. He has several times over the years said that he wants out of his contract. He never meant it until this year. He started lawyers negotiating twice this year. He stopped them in the spring. Then, about a month ago with the guidance of his new ICM team and a new LA manager (who were making zero $ on his current deal), he once again said he wanted to leave and this time they negotiated the full package.
“Because of all the false threats in the past, it was impossible for the network to know if he was really going to sign the final document yesterday. That’s why promos for his show were still running after he quit on the air. The network couldn’t really believe it or act on it until he said it on TV. They couldn’t tell the promo people to pull Keith’s show out of the cycle until they were sure. His staff learned he was quitting when they heard him say it on TV.
“Comcast has had no impact at all on MSNBC [yet]. Phil Griffin has complete authority. He makes deals without having to consult with anyone. He has made proposals over the years on the fly and in high-speed contexts where he is acting alone and with full authority. MSNBC is Phil Griffin’s network and no one at NBC thinks they have a better idea than Phil about what to do next.”

Adam Green, co-founder, Progressive Change Campaign Committee at BoldProgressives.org who “saved” Olbermann’s job the last go-round with MSNBC, had this to say: “The newly announced line up, including the addition of Cenk Uygur, consists of people who will undoubtedly continue Keith Olbermann’s legacy of holding power to account. The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell will move to 8 PM weekdays on MSNBC, and The Rachel Maddow Show remaining at 9 PM, with The Ed Show starring Ed Schultz moving to 10 PM. Cenk Uyger of the liberal “Young Turks” will be taking over Ed’s 6 PM slot. The moves are simultaneous with new owner Comcast starting to show its hand over the broadcast network and cable NBCU after receiving FCC approval. “He’s been very problematic,” an NBCU source told Deadline about Comcast’s attitude to Olbermann. Officially, the Comcast takeover is next week. But word has been circulating for months now that the new owners have wanted to “tinker” with MSNBC and had many changes in store, including a right turn for the left-wing cable channel so that it represents both political points of view more evenly. It is well known that both Comcast chief Brian Roberts and NBCU chief Steve Burke have donated heavily to the Republican party with Burke more recently donating money to a few Democrats as well as heavily to Republicans. Roberts was a co-chairman of the host committee at the 2000 Republican Convention while Burke raised at least $200,000 for George W Bush’s re-election campaign.

Those of you who are encouraging Olbermann to return to sports are probably not old enough or remember, or are unaware, that, when Olbermann’s ESPN contract ended 13 years ago, he was essentially “drummed out” of the sports world. Either Sports Illustrated or The Sporting News reported that Olbermann was the “most detested man” in sports broadcasting.
Two years ago, Olbermann began showing up on NBC’s Sunday night football broadcast, but then suddenly disappeared and did not appear at all this year. Why? Because his appearance caused millions of viewers to switch channels and a lot of them did not switch back. You know the sponsors must have loved that.
So, before you decide that Olbermann is going to be the next Bob Costas, etc., remember that he is reviled by millions of American men who watch NFL football and voted for Reagan, and who is anathema among the sports broadcasting fraternity.
Olbermann is finished. He wrote his own epitaph.
Standing up to others is only brave if it’s true. Why would his ratings be even the fraction that they were unless there were people who were as cracked as he was to believe his truth. Would I read that junk for millions of dollars a year? Yes. Give him credit for that. The “truth” issue is not a problem with commentators. It’s their job to offer opinion shaded in their own experience. Olbermann was simply an ass; an arrogant dunderhead when it came to discussing politics. In that regard, his “truth” was to simply paint those he disliked with a bucketful of lies.

The reason I didn’t like his show (I won’t say I didn’t like him, as I’ve never met him and got to know him) is the socialist views he espoused. I believe Comcast will do what it takes to make this network into a money maker. Profit is not an evil thing. If no one made profits, no one would work and there would be no one to take taxes from for the government and they would be more broke than they already are. In the case of MSNBC losing one viewer might affect their share…there are so few of them. If this is really a turn to the right and MSNBC eventually becomes a “center” network their ratings will probably double.

What many Americans are doing is not seeing what’s out beyond the fringe. Aggressive Left & Right commentary is more narrow and focused to keep you looking in one direction or another. By standing back, taking a moment to pause, and watch what’s unfolding in front of you, you’re able to make the best decision for yourself. All Glenn Beck is providing is the information in hopes that your decisions are as responsible as possible. How wonderful it is that we still live in a country that allows us to have such options.

I really liked Keith Olberman, but the show became too hostile. I think the mood of the country has changed as a result of the Tucson shooting. And most of us are tired of the screaming and yelling.
That’s not to say that there is plenty of room for good liberal analysis and some good snarkiness. Look at The Daily Show or Colbert.
Now if MSNBC could stop treating treat Sarah Plain as a major political figure and more like Ann Coulter — a calculating individual who says incendiary things to attract media attention — that would be perfect.

MSNBC has not been profitable for some time. 13 to 1/5 the viewership of Fox. From a pure business standpoint, Olbermann has been nothing but the “anchor store” of a failing liberal shopping mall. Even fox’s non-partisan programs, Brett Baier and Shepherd Smith (bordering on random tabloid), beat out MSNBC. The real problem was not the “liberal” subject matter, but the fact that all Olbremann and Ed Schultz do is bach fox and fox personalities to the point of meaninglessness. Even the insipid Matthews does not do this that much.

Having made a gentleman’s wager with a friend that Olbermann would be sacked when Comcast took over, I’ll be enjoying dinner with my friend. Keith Olbermann, with self-smitten smarminess, was not without value when he took on the Bush regime and its lying us into war. However when in a special comment triggered by criticism by Te Koppel, he equated himself with Edward R Murrow he had gone off a cliff. He is no Edward R Murrow.
While it’s true that ‘fair and balanced’ is a crock when the ‘facts’ presented are lies, Olbermann himself was no stranger to mendacity as he demonstrated when he threw Don Imus under the bus, lying about a sponsor withdrawing from Imus in the Morning. That sponsor, Bigelow Tea, was in the midst of negotiating a new advertising contract as the then current one was expiring. Bigelow and other sponsors remain as sponsors with Imus now. It should be noted that Olbermann was a frequent Imus guest for many years and, believe it or not, was employed by Fox ( a fact omitted from the bio that appeared on Countdown’s website).
Even those guests who appeared on Countdown were required to toe the Olbermann line. No deviation was permitted as became evident when Dana Milbank of the Washington Post became permanently a non-guest for having the temerity to not see a particular issue Keith’s way.
His oft repeated claim to have criticized Obama more than Fox personalities criticized Bush over eight years, is so much hot air as he continued to defend and promote the so-called health insurance reform which will enrich the insurance and pharmaceutical industries, ot to mention his failure to take Obama over the coals for Obama’s widening of the Afghan war. In short, Olbermann was and is a hypocritical creature with an inflated view of his own intelligence and, to speak plainly, a despicable individual.
